Dr. Yamicia Connor: Paving Her Own Way in STEM

Dr. Yamicia Connor is an OB-GYN physician-scientist passionate about improving women’s health through innovations and reducing health inequities.  She’s been able to combine the immediate help that surgery and practicing medicine can provide to patients with long-term cancer research to understand the disease.


Growing up, she knew that she wanted to be a doctor. In high school, she attended a program at M.I.T. that introduced her to the scientific side of medicine and would go on to receive a dual SB degree in Biology and Chemical/Biological Engineering and a minor in Biomedical Engineering from MIT in 2007. Throughout her time in undergrad, she created an entire program to tutor younger students who wanted to follow in her footsteps.

After undergrad, she knew that she wanted to pursue women’s health. She learned about the lack of research on cancers that specifically impact women, and was conflicted on whether to pursue medicine to directly help women or to pursue science and conduct the much-needed research herself- so she did both! Dr. Connor obtained a Ph.D. in Health Sciences and Technology: Medical Engineering and Medical Physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2013 and a medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 2016.

After graduation, Dr. Connor went on to complete her residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, completed a Mongan Commonwealth Minority Health Policy Fellowship and obtained an MPH from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2021.

Today, she is a Gynecologic Oncology Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a Women’s Health Consultant at GV (previously Google Ventures). She founded Race to Better Health, an organization dedicated to improving health equity.

Dr. Connor is a strong advocate for using science to advance health equity across the board, and continues to go above and beyond in both her personal and professional life.
